I realized, while making this that is was a sort of self portrait. Collage is a great way to create a self portrait. There are so many things that make a person who and what he is but it is the "image" that we seem to cherish and remember, for better or worse.

I have also come to the conclusion that I am a drawer (draftsperson), a collage maker, and I like taking candid pictures of crap I see but I am not a painter and I am fine with that. I will continue to use paint to accentuate my drawings and collages or even draw with paint but for now - no paintings.

What I learned working on the painting shown in progress I - V

So, looking at the development and final product of Untitled 2011 I think I have made an important discovery about my working methods. In review of the progress of the painting I discovered that there were several points in the development of this piece where I should have stopped or, at the very least, pulled back. Without going on and on I think, in my work, the concept of "less is more" is an important truth. When my work is loose and spontaneous it has a more genuine feel. The final version of this painting (Progress V) is a bit cold and stiff for my liking.

So, while the piece itself is not a success the process of making it certainly was.

Done - at least for now - I think.

It was an interesting experiment. I think I learned a few things working on this but in the end I am not completely thrilled with the outcome but not completely repulsed either. I think I need to move on and away from this one.

My friend, Rob, found this mini review of my web site: Timothy J. Wright dot com, I think it is a fair assessment of my work and gives me some things to think about. Most importantly the lack of a completion or depth to much of my work. I am and have been aware of this for some time. It is refreshing to hear it from an outside source and it encourages me to attempt to get to the "next level" and commit to creating works that are a bit more meaningful to me and hopefully you, the viewer.

This collage grew organically and emerged as a political pice. I have a pile of images and I found the gun which made me think of the odd obsession many Americans have with guns and the fear of the evil boogeyman politician taking away their precious killing tools. Starvation, slavery, genocide, Illness and corporate take over of individual freedoms are just a few things that are far more of a real threat to our freedom than not having our bang bang guns.

I was thinking about how kids pass these notes: "I like you. Do you like me?" or "Would you go to the dance with me?" Ahh! So simple! Two choices, yes or no, and no middle-ground, no confusion, no games. Wouldn't affairs of the heart be so much easier if it could just be "Yes" or "No"?

This idea was percolating in my head and I am not 100% satisfied with this outcome but I am glad I took the steps to release it from the vanishing gray matter.
